Workshops

When Aboriginal people are sitting around talking or storytelling, it’s called “yarning”. This gave me the idea for a series of cultural workshops which I’ve called Yumala Yarnings.

These fun, interactive workshops are especially suited to students and travellers wanting to experience the real Australia through Aboriginal storytelling and art making activities.

There are two Yumala Yarnings workshops for you to enjoy:

Respecting Art and Culture 1.5 hours
Art and culture go hand in hand with passing on traditional stories & ways of life. That’s how it’s been in the past and today it’s still very important to me and my people.

My workshop focuses on respecting cultural diversity and helping you understand more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures by looking at symbols, flags, artworks and artefacts from Australia’s many Indigenous cultures.

Boomerang Painting Workshop I hour
I reckon every household should have a boomerang on display! They’re a great icon of Australia and really useful as well. Did you know that boomerangs come in many shapes and sizes and have many uses, from hunting and feuding to music and ceremony?

My workshop is about sharing culture through storytelling and hands-on art activities. Hear my story about the cultural significance of the boomerang and how it is used by Aboriginal people.

Then draw up your own design and paint it onto a pre-cut boomerang shape. At the completion of the workshop you will have a unique, hand painted boomerang to take away and put on proud display in your home.
